Redirects. What is it? Most common types and cases

Bussiness 24 Jan, 2021

When you start a website everything is very simple. Your URL is unique and simple.

As your website evolves, it becomes more complex. In addition to reviewing the web hosting package (to support increases in users and traffic) at bastify, you have more pages, posts to deal with in your URL. In many cases, other domains are purchased that you want to redirect to your website.

What is a redirect to a website?

A website redirect will take your website URL and point it to another website. When someone types or clicks on that original URL, they will be directed to the new page or website.

You can implement redirects in a URL or page by page. Below we detail the most frequent redirects:

Types of redirects

301 Redirect

A website redirect will take your website URL and point it to another website. When someone types or clicks on that original URL, they will be directed to the new page or website. You can implement redirects on a URL or page-by-page basis. Below we detail the most frequent redirects:

302 Redirect

A 302 redirect is used when you want to temporarily redirect a URL, but intend to return to the URL former. For example, you are redesigning your website, but you want to direct users to a different domain while you finish building your website.

Meta Refresh

A meta update is not used very often. However, you&;#39;ve probably still seen this type of redirect on page loading screens.

Have you ever landed on a page and been greeted with a message saying: “The original URL has moved, now you are being redirected?" Click here if you are not redirected within 5 seconds? Then you&;#39;ve experienced a meta update.

This type of redirect passes a bit of connection, but not as much as a 301 redirect.

Reasons why you would implement a redirection of your website

Some common scenarios where you would like to redirect your website to another.

Redirect a subdirectory to a page on your website

Maybe when you created your website you decided to create your blog page on a subdomain of your website. So instead of your blog URL being “myweb.com/blog”, it has been “blog.miweb.com”. Only now have you decided that it makes sense to change your blog from the original subdomain structure.

In this case, you will want to implement a redirect.

The same goes for any other reason that you have created a website or section of your website on the subdomain, and now you want to change the URL structure.

Redirect duplicate content to the original page< /h3>

Having duplicate content on your website can really ruin your ranking. If you have a large website, you probably have some pages with duplicate content. When you have more than one version of the same page, it becomes difficult for Google to figure out which page to rank.

You can avoid common duplicate content problems by redirecting the duplicate content fragment to the original. This will not only reduce confusion with your visitors, but will also improve your search engine rankings.

Redirect multiple domains to a single domain

It is common practice to purchase multiple domain names related to your primary URL to protect your brand.

But, instead of simply purchasing these domains and not using them, you can redirect them to your main website. Whether it&;#39;s common misspellings of your existing domain name, other domain name extensions, or something else entirely, it&;#39;s worth redirecting to your main website.

Redirect your old domain to your new domain

Did you originally build your website on a domain that wasn&;#39;t your first choice?

Whatever the reason, you should implement a redirection from your old domain to your new domain. Now, migrating your entire website is more intensive than a simple redirect, but it&;#39;s a good starting point

Redirect an old URL to a new URL

Sometimes you will have to change the URL of existing pages and posts. Maybe you are recovering your existing URL structure, or you moved some pages and the old URL no longer makes sense.

Yes This sounds familiar, so you&;#39;ll want to implement a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. This is especially true if your previous posts are already indexed in search engines, or if you have inline links anywhere.
